Iran to expand electricity export to neighbors

TEHRAN, Nov. 16 (MNA) –- Connecting Iran’s electricity grid to those of the republics of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey and Iraq through the Iranian provinces of Eastern Azarbaijan and Western Azarbaijan is quite plausible, said an Iranian provincial official.

Energy swap between Iran and its neighbors is currently conducted at five points. “We also exchange electricity with Turkey at the Bazargan border point”, noted here, Fattah Qara-Bagh, managing director of the Azarbaijan Regional Electricity Company.

Our electricity exchange with the republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia is transparent and is done in a way that at the end of each year the amount of the energy exported and imported to and from the countries is equal, ISNA news agency quoted the official as saying on Wednesday.

He also pointed to the increase in the electricity exports to Turkey and stated that, negotiations with Russians are underway to expand Iran’s electricity grid and to later connect it to their electricity grid through a proposed 400-kilowatt transmission line from Ardebil in Iran.

“We also hope that in the coming years we would be able to export the commodity to Iraq through the Iranian border points of Sardasht and Iranshahr,” said the official in conclusion.
